Overview

Since its opening in 1971, SOKA University adopted the objective of becoming a university that fosters creative individuals, based on its founding principles: “Be the highest seat of learning for humanistic education”; “Be the cradle of a new culture”; “Be a fortress for the peace of humankind”. Currently, SOKA University has academic agreements with 242 universities in 66 countries/regions, and been a diverse campus. In addition, SOKA University’s engagements are highly recognized. In the “Top Global University Project” sponsored by the Ministry of Education that supports the global development of Japanese universities, SOKA University obtained the highest appraisal of “S” (out of the five appraisal levels, S to D) for two years consecutively, in 2017 and 2020 interim evaluations. Based on the founding principles, SOKA University fosters global citizens capable of contributing to the happiness of others and world peace, thus allowing each student to discover their potential.

Status of Admitted Student 

Students will be admitted as non-degree-seeking students.
After being admitted, the students will have a chance to take the entrance exam for international students. If they pass the exam, they will be admitted to a degree program.

 

Description of the Non-Degree Program

  • The Undergraduate Non-Degree Program accepts international students who intend to take specialized courses and general education courses offered in Japanese or English at SOKA University.

  • Entrance: April ​

  • Duration: 1 or 2 semesters 
     

Eligibility

  • Must currently reside in Japan

  • Must be a citizen of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sudan, Syria or Ukraine

  • Displaced students who relocated to Japan through an education pathways program administered by Pathways Japan. (Students who did not relocate to Japan through a program administered by Pathways Japan but currently attend Pathways Japan's partner language schools may also apply.)

  • No age limit

  • Must meet one of the criteria below.

    •  Undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in universities outside Japan (including those taking a leave of absence or taking courses online)

    • Those who have already graduated from or dropped out of universities outside Japan and currently not enrolled in higher education

    • Those who are enrolled in short-term programs at Japanese universities

    • Those who are attending or have graduated from Japanese language schools in Japan

    • Those who have graduated from high school in 2025 or will graduate from high school by March 2026

  • Single with no dependents

  • Japanese proficiency equivalent to JLPT N4 level or above
     

Language of Instruction
Both Japanese and English.

Language Requirement
For the non-degree program:

  • Japanese: JLPT N4 equivalent and above ((Even if the applicant has not taken the N4 exam, they will be considered if they have proficiency at that level)

  • English: TOEFL iBT 61+ or IELTS 5.5+
     

*Please note that the above are minimum requirements, and the types of courses students can take will depend on language proficiency as follows:

  • JLPT N4~N3 with low English proficiency: Only Japanese language courses

  • JLPT N4~N3 with high English proficiency: Japanese language courses + general education courses taught in English

  • JLPT N2+ with low English proficiency: Japanese language courses + general education courses taught in Japanese

  • JLPT N2+ wth high English proficiency: Japanese language courses + general education courses taught in both Japanese and English

Accommodation
On-campus dormitory provided at no cost. 
 

Stipend
Provided (80,000 JPY/month) 
*If a student receives stipend from other support organizations, the stipend will not be provided during that period.
